Case studies

Real problems. Worked together.

A few of the situations formulators, co-manufacturers, and processors have brought us, and how we worked them. Customer identities anonymized unless a release is on file.

Formulation support

Mid-size pet food brand · Midwest

Reformulated around a tariff exposure without losing palatability.

The challenge

A core ingredient in the brand's flagship dry formula was caught in a new import tariff window. Their broker came back with a cost increase the brand couldn't pass through. They needed a functional substitution, fast, without retesting the entire formula.

How we worked it

Northland’s team walked the formulation with the brand’s nutritionist and proposed a domestic potato-based input the dryer could spec to match the original on moisture, grind, and inclusion-rate behavior. We ran a trial batch on dedicated line time, shipped samples to their R&D, and iterated on grind once before locking the spec.

Outcome

  • Reformulated to a domestic, tariff-insulated input
  • Held palatability and bag-density targets
  • Production transition completed within a single quarter

Supply chain partnership

National private-label co-manufacturer

De-risked a single-source ingredient without rewriting the formula.

The challenge

A co-manufacturer running national private-label SKUs was sole-sourced on a key dried ingredient. One weather event or one facility outage would have stopped shipments. Procurement asked for a qualified second source: same spec, ready to run.

How we worked it

We took the customer’s existing spec, ran a qualification batch through Northland’s drying lines, and worked with their QA team through the supplier-verification process. Direct grower relationships into the upstream co-product supply meant we could commit to volume without a broker layer in the way.

Outcome

  • Qualified second source for a previously single-sourced ingredient
  • No formula or label change required
  • Rail-served logistics let them stage volume against forecast

Throughput + cost optimization

Regional vegetable processor

Turned an underutilized co-product stream into a spec-grade ingredient.

The challenge

A vegetable processor had a steady volume of off-grade and trim material going to lower-value end-uses. They knew there was a pet food story in it but didn’t have a dryer, a spec, or a route to market.

How we worked it

Northland evaluated the stream, ran drying trials at multiple moisture and grind targets, and helped the processor understand which pet food formulators would value the resulting ingredient. We took the input, dried to spec, and handled the logistics into the buyer’s plant.

Outcome

  • Co-product stream moved from lower-value end-use to spec-grade pet food ingredient
  • New revenue line for the processor with no capex
  • Northland carried manufacturing, QA, and logistics end-to-end
